In the cup Loa Waka is the balanced Fijian profile Kalm is known for: clean, slightly bright on the way in, settling into a calm that is more relaxed-and-present than couch-bound at one or two servings, and heavier if you push it. Micronized drinks a little thicker and earthier than a strained brew because the fiber stays in. The brand-site rating runs high and the Amazon reviews are steady. What we want, from Kalm as from everyone, is a posted COA to turn 'lab tested for strength' into a number.

This is the bag that settles the Kavafied question. Kalm's Loa Waka Traditional Grind in the 16 oz size was $69.99 at our check, about $4.37 an ounce, which undercuts Kavafied Supreme's $6.25 an ounce by roughly 30% while naming its cultivar and lateral-root grade. It is medium grind, so it is the right powder for an AluBall, and at 10 to 15 grams per shell a pound is 30 to 45 shells, about $1.55 to $2.30 each. Same Loa Waka as the micronized, stronger per serving because you are kneading the actives out of a larger mass of root, and you strain the fiber away.

The only reasons to pick Kavafied's bag over this one are profile and sticker: Supreme is a heavier Vanuatu, and $49.99 is a lower outlay than $69.99 even though it buys half the root. On every other axis Kalm's pound wins.

Kavafied's root is the convenience buy, and that is fine as far as it goes. Kava Supreme is the brand's Vanuatu offering, the heavier counterpart to its Fijian BATI, sold as noble and ground medium to match the AluBall. At $49.99 for 8 oz, about $6.25 an ounce or roughly $2.20 to $3.30 a shell, it sits between Kalm's two formats on price per ounce and below both on disclosure: Kavafied names the island but not the cultivar, and, like Kalm, posts no COA.
