Kava Price Index (July 2026): What Kava Actually Costs

Powder is where kava is cheapest per serving and most expensive-looking per bag. Traditional grind is the classic strain-it-yourself format; every row below assumes the ~14 g per cup convention explained in the methodology. Note what bulk does: the two 1 kg Koa bags carry the biggest stickers in the whole index ($119.99) and still land near the cheapest cups.

Traditional grind average: $53.81 sticker, $2.11 per cup across the 17 bags with a stated size. The whole format lives inside a narrow band, $1.49 to $3.13 a cup, which means brand choice barely moves your per-cup cost; bag size moves it far more.

Micronized is the stir-and-drink whole-root format, dosed at roughly a teaspoon (5 g), and it is the cheapest full-strength kava in the index. Our best micronized kava guide ranks this shelf on quality; this table is purely the money.

Micronized average: $1.10 per serving ($0.84 to $1.46). True instant, the dehydrated-brew format explained in our best instant kava guide, costs more per serving because making it throws away the fibrous bulk:

Drink mixes and stick packs sell pre-measured convenience: tear, stir, drink. You pay for the portioning. The spread runs three-to-one, from FORTILUME's $1.33 serving to Mitra9's $4.00 stick.

Drink mix average: $2.63 per serving. Capsules look like the cheapest kava on Amazon, and per capsule they are. The honest caveat: several of the cheapest bottles are multi-herb blends (Vitamatic packs magnesium, ashwagandha, GABA and more around its kava), and a single capsule is nowhere near the kavalactone content of a brewed cup, so treat per-capsule cost as a different unit, not a like-for-like serving.

Liquid extracts and tinctures are the smallest tickets in the index, $11.53 to $20.98 a bottle, but the least comparable per serving: only Herb Pharm states a supply on its listing (about three weeks used daily, roughly $1.00 a day), so the other two get sticker prices only rather than a guessed serving count.

Candy, gummies, and tea bags round out the budget tier. The same caveat applies twice over: a $0.28 Yogi tea bag is a gentle multi-herb blend, not a bowl of kava, and candy pieces are measured in milligrams of extract.

Can average: $4.65 across the eight packs with a clear count, a band of $3.08 to $6.67. Shots are the most expensive kava per serving in the index, and spirits (the 750 ml bottles poured by the shot) land in between:

Line the formats up by average cost per serving and the market's logic is plain: you are paying for preparation, not for kava. Micronized ($1.10) and traditional grind ($2.11) make you do the work of measuring or straining, and they are the cheapest. Drink mixes ($2.63) pre-measure it for you. Instant ($2.81) pre-brews it. Spirits ($3.09) bottle it, cans ($4.65) carbonate and chill it, and shots ($5.60) shrink it to a pocketable single serve, the most processing and the highest price. From the cheapest computed serving (Kona's $0.84 micronized) to the priciest (K-Tropix's $7.50 shot) is a factor of almost nine for what is, functionally, one serving of kava.

The sticker spread runs $11.49 (Maui Medicinal's small-bag Hawaiian root) to $119.99 (Koa's kilo bags), and the index average is $46.35, which says something useful on its own: the typical kava purchase on Amazon is a forty-something-dollar commitment, closer to a specialty coffee subscription than an impulse buy. Budget brands mostly compete by shrinking the bag, not by lowering the per-serving price.

People ask because kava bars sell kava the way regular bars sell beer, and several of the products in this index market themselves as alcohol alternatives. The honest answer from our data is: it depends entirely on which kava and which alcohol. Brewed at home, kava is cheap: $1.49 to $3.13 a cup from traditional grind, or as little as $0.84 a serving micronized. That sits in the same neighborhood as drinking at home generally, where a typical grocery-store beer or a modest pour of wine also lands in the low single dollars. Neither habit is meaningfully cheaper than the other at the home-brew tier.

The ready-to-drink tier is where the comparison gets interesting. A kava can averages $4.65 ($3.08 to $6.67) and a kava shot averages $5.60, which is more than a store-bought beer, comparable to a craft beer, and generally less than a cocktail out. At an actual kava bar, a shell of kava is typically priced like a bar drink too. So on price alone, kava is neither the cheap alternative nor the expensive one; it swaps roughly sideways at every tier, and the real differences between the two are effects, not economics.
